FAQ

Your Questions, Answered

DO I NEED A FISHING LICENSE AND WHAT DOES IT COST? WHAT IS THE SALMON CONSERVATION STAMP?

Everybody on the boat must have a fishing license. There are 1 day, 3 day, 5 day and annual licenses available. Kids 16 and under fish free but do require a salmon conservation stamp in order to retain Salmon. Costs can be viewed here: https://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/licence-permis/application-eng.html

WHAT DO I DO WITH THE FISH I CATCH? CAN I BRING IT HOME WITH ME?

Absolutely! There are several things we can do with your catch. Trilogy Fish Store (on site) offers professional fish processing; filleted, vacuum packed, flash frozen and then packed for travel.  Bring it with you in the car or check it as extra baggage on your flight. It will stay frozen for up to 30 hours when packed for travel.

International processing and shipping is available through St Jeans Cannery. Please note processing and shipping estimates are 6-8 weeks from drop off to delivery during peak season. They will call to make sure you're going to be home before shipping via air overnight.

Cook Your Catch at the local 1909 Restaurant. Your guide will prep your fish to be cooked by the team at 1909. What better way to enjoy the days catch? Just show up and eat. YUM!

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE WEATHER IS BAD ON THE DAY OF MY TRIP?

Clayoquot Sound is over 2500 square kilometres in size, giving us plenty of areas to fish where we are protected from the wind and waves when needed. Sure it might be raining, but that's why we have a half covered boat with rain gear to go along with it. The only time we cancel a trip is if there is lightning in the forecast.

HALF DAY, FULL DAY OR MULTI-DAY?

Full days and multi days on the water are the best way to experience it all. We have over 35 nautical miles of coastline to fish and you can't see it all in one day. Multiple days on the water guarantee you the chance to catch enough fish to make you feel like your arms are going to fall off and also give us the chance to show you all the different types of fishing we can do out here. Half days are great for those looking for a taste of what this amazing coastline has to offer.

WHAT IS YOUR CANCELLATION POLICY?

Our booking policies and cancellation policy can be viewed here.

WHAT KIND OF FISH CAN WE EXPECT TO CATCH?

We have multiple species of fish to target here in Clayoquot Sound and the Pacific Ocean. What we decide to target and how we fish for them is ultimately up to you. We can fish for Chinook, Coho, Sockeye and Pink Salmon, Halibut, Lingcod, Cabezon, a variety of Rockfish species, dog fish, skate, sea run cutthroat trout and many more; after all, it's a big ocean!

How much should I leave as a gratuity or tip for my guide?

Leaving a gratuity for your guide is always optional, much like a restaurant. But think of it the same way in that your guide is only paid for the duration of the trip and there's a lot that goes into being a captain pre and post trip to ensure a successful day on the water. A typical gratuity is anywhere from 10-20% of your trips total cost but ultimately, its up to you.

What happens if I get sea sick? Do I get my money back?

Unfortunately, we cannot offer refunds for motion sickness. We strongly recomend taking the necessary actions to combat motion sickness before departing the dock. If you do get sea sick while we're out there, we can always move to the inshore fishing grounds to finish up your trip. There are no refunds for coming back to the dock early.
